In a new interview with Wired, Apple Music’s Zane Lowe and Oliver Schusser dive into how the service will evolve and where it’s headed over the next year with more livestreams, behind the scenes content, and radio, but not as we currently know it. The last official report from Apple put paying Apple Music subscribers at 60 million. In line with our report from last week, Apple has flipped the switch in its Apple Store app to allow for customers to check availability for the new iPhone models at Apple Stores. The process is similar to the one for Personal Pickup on Apple’s online store. Bloomberg reports that Apple has received preliminary approval for the $450 million lawsuit settlement reached over its ebook pricing practices. The settlement was first reached out of court about six weeks ago just before the case was set to go before a jury. Despite that development, Judge Cote in New York voiced concern over a clause in the settlement leading many to believe it may not receive approval, although she has since decided the settlement is appropriate....

According to a new report from Digitimes Apple is ramping up their orders for touch-screens Q4 of 2010. Apple along with other companies will be putting their suppliers, TPK Touch Solutions and Wintek, in short touch-screen supply during the 4th Quarter. The report notes that these touch-screens will mainly be for “handsets” so there is room to specultate that these touch-screens are for a new iPhone launching in early 2011 or the 5th generation iPhone coming Summer 2011....

Apple has hired Terry Gilton the founder of a small app company called pSiFlow to be their Senior Director of Sensor Technology. Dr. Gilton who has a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from UCSB joined Apple this month, though he is still listed as residing in Boise Idaho. His company, which makes apps for iOS is still listed as being active, so it isn’t clear if Apple purchased the company or just hired off its Founder/CEO....

Apple is definitely cooking up a big surprise for September this year. Though everything looks calm, Apple is swiftly working and developing the iOS 12. Speaking of which, the latest iOS 12 beta 3 is now rolling out to various Apple devices. The current iteration of upcoming iOS 12 concentrates on tweaks and fix-ups. Existing features are getting an overhaul and optimization. Nothing really big, however, this itself is a big update that iOS 12 is steadily getting into stable form....

Just two days following the release of iOS 5.0.1 Beta 1 (which fixed bugs affecting battery life, enabled multitasking gestures on the original iPad and fixed the Smart Cover security flaw, among other things), and on the heels of yesterday’s release of iTunes 10.5.1 Beta 2, Apple today seeded its developer community with another point release, the iOS 5.0.1 Beta 2 software build 9A404 (the previous beta carries a build number of 9A402)....

Aluminum is Apple’s go-to material for making many of its products sleek and durable, and now the company is taking serious steps to ensure using its favorite metal is also good for the planet. Two major aluminum producers are announcing a “joint venture to commercialize patented technology that eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions from the traditional smelting process,” and Apple played a key role in getting to this step. Alcoa Corporation and Rio Tinto Aluminum have formed a new joint venture called Elysis that is working to further develop and share a process for creating aluminum that uses a method which releases oxygen instead of greenhouse gases....

Apple will have to pay a patent holding firm called Acacia a penalty of $22 million, a federal jury in East Texas decided this week. The issue is over a patent dispute, which is all to common for Apple, regarding cellular network technology. Reuters reports that a subsidiary of Acacia Research brought the case against Apple which played out in Texas court as is common with similar cases: For its part, Acacia Research is what some in the technology world would describe as a patent troll....

It’s official, MacBooks are the highest-quality notebooks money can buy. Consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports has awarded the entire lineup of Apple notebooks the highest scores among all contenders, ranking them #1 in nearly every category across the board. For example, Mac notebooks lead the pack in five out of seven spots in the 13-inch category. The paid report, relayed by The Loop, puts the 11- and 13-inch MacBook Air as well as the 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro ahead of other branded machines from first-tier vendors....

Apple’s delayed wireless AirPods may not be the only new earphones the company has in the works. A patent originally dating back to 2008 but only published today describes what seems a logical next step for a company increasingly focused on health and fitness: a sports earphone. We reported in May that Apple was expected to launch an iPhone payments system with the iPhone 6 and iOS 8. Subsequent reports echoed that same Information including naming Visa as a partner. Re/code today reports that Apple has signed up a major American financial institution to work on its iPhone wallet program. Apple’s new payments system is expected to let iPhone 6 owners use their phone in place of a credit card or cash to pay for goods in brick-and-mortar stores....

According to a report from Fortune and her LinkedIn profile, Apple has recently hired former Nest executive and co-founder of Google X Yoky Matsuoka. At Nest, Matsuoka was the head of technology. According to the report, Matsuoka is joining Apple to help with its health initiatives, including ResearchKit, HealthKit, and CareKit. Matsuoka will report to chief operating officer Jeff Williams who oversees all of the company’s health projects. Matsuoka joined Google to help start the Google X lab in 2009, but left shortly thereafter in 2010 to go to Alphabet subsidiary Nest and be the company’s head of technology....

The iPad Pro quietly gained a new capability in iOS 9.3 beta 2: German developer Stefan Wolfrum tweeted that the device can now update the firmware in devices attached to the Smart Connector. He was offered, and able to complete, a firmware update to his Logitech Create keyboard. Firmware updates of accessories usually need you to connect them to a Mac, but as the Smart Connector is unique to the iPad Pro, it’s likely this fact that prompted the new capability …...

Here’s an example of app notifications showing on the Lock Screen. When enabled to show on the Lock Screen, anyone passing by will be able to see your notifications – even if you created a pass code. To disable notifications from showing on the Lock Screen, go to Settings » Notifications. Then tap the app you don’t want to display. Here, I’m selecting Reminders. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation notes, Apple (and Dropbox) have joined up with the Digital Due Process group which seeks to modernize digital surveilance laws. The timing of the announcement would seem to coincide nicely with Apple’s iCloud release in the coming days. Now that Apple is a Cloud vendor (OK MobileMe, .mac, eworld were all Cloud too), it would be good to hear where they stand on giving private data to law enforcement or foreign governments....

Now that Apple’s online store has been refreshed after today’s WWDC keynote we’re seeing a variety of new accessories available. Among the notable new products is the wireless Magic Keyboard with a numeric keypad. Until now, Apple only offered its keyboard with numeric trackpad in a wired variant. Users were forced to decide between sticking with the wired option or spending more money to get a third-party numeric keypad add-on....

While it has been in the works for years, Apple Music has officially launched “Apple Digitial Masters” as a way to bring its “Mastered for iTunes” hi-res recordings into one global catalog. Reported by Billboard, Apple has today confirmed that it is combining its collection of hi-res recordings from the Mastered for iTunes program with an initiative called Apple Digital Masters for Apple Music. The report notes that Apple has been slowly rolling out this content over the past years but today is the first time the company has made an announcement about it....
