After confirming the closure dates of stores in Frisco and Plano, Texas earlier today, Apple has formally announced the grand opening of its newest U.S. retail store. Apple Galleria Dallas will open to customers on April 13th at 10:00 A.M. local time. Galleria Dallas is located less than 10 miles from Dallas Love Field airport and directly north of downtown. The indoor shopping mall is best known for its central atrium featuring an ice skating rink and expansive glass dome....

According to a report from Reuters this evening, a federal jury in California has found Apple guilty of infringing on two patents held by Canadian intellectual property company WiLan. The jury awarded WiLan $145.1 million in damages, the report says… In a statement released by WiLan, it says the patents in question relate to wireless technology used by the iPhone. One is for a “method and apparatus for bandwidth request protocols in a wireless communication system,” while the other is for “adaptive call admission control for use in a wireless communication system....

One of the 21 patents originally filed in Q1 2011 is for an iOS remote control that would clip onto a steering wheel. Apple has actually hidden a binary message as an Easter egg in a couple frames of its “Apple event in a flash” video… The Easter egg is presented in the section when they are comparing the power of the new entry-level iPad to the best-selling Windows PC laptop. The screen of code is clearly a reference to a typical Windows blue screen of death error message. The binary message is a simple ASCII phrase, and it translates to “So you took the time to translate this?...

Sure, it was significant as it represented the first time in four years Sony had grown a sales lead on its rival, but as we predicted Sony’s little home turf advantage has evaporated already, following Apple’s introduction of the new iPod range, according to BCN. Apple’s iPod market share shot up to 58 per cent in the week ending September 13, far and away ahead of Sony with 32.1 per cent....

The New York Times reports that Apple has knocked off Coca-Cola (Sugar water!) to become the ‘World’s Most Valuable Brand’ according to the annual Interbrand Best Global Brands Report. Apple’s rivals Google and Samsung also moved up in the list with Mountain View also hopping over Coca-Cola to #2 at a $93.3B (up 34%) valuation while Samsung entered the top 10 with a new brand strategy called the Brand Ideal, which includes “a greater focus on social purpose”....

Voice control on Sonos speakers with Alexa integration has worked with skipping songs and play/pause, controlling volume, and nearly everything other Alexa skill, but Apple Music control through Alexa required further integration. That future is today. Simply update the Sonos app, enable the Apple Music skill in the Alexa app if you haven’t already, then link your account. Sonos One and Sonos Beam also support AirPlay 2, Apple’s wireless audio streaming protocol, which works with multi-room audio with other AirPlay 2 speakers including HomePod....

Apple has officially announced dates for its annual developer conference where it is expected to unveil iOS 12, macOS 10.14, watchOS 5, and tvOS 12. WWDC 2018 will run from June 4 through June 8 and take place in San Jose, California for the second year in a row. Specifically, the conference will be held at the McEnery Convention Center once again. As with previous years, Apple is relying on a lottery system to address demand for tickets....

Update May 12: TomTom confirmed to Reuters today that “its global agreement with Apple covers maps and related information” but declined to comment further on the specifics of the deal. Engadget just posted the screenshots above by an anonymous tipster who claimed to be running an iOS 6 developer beta on the iPhone 4S. It appears Apple is at least getting some data for its new Maps app through a partnership with TomTom....

As Apple continues its efforts to move towards using its own ARM processors on the Mac, it has hired a key designer from ARM. In May, Apple hired Mike Filippo to join its chip architecture team based out of Texas. ARM has confirmed the departure. Filippo worked at ARM for 10 years, serving as its Lead CPU Architect and Lead System Architect, according to his LinkedIn. Prior to joining ARM, Filippo spent time at both AMD and Intel....

iPhone manufacturer Foxconn has posted a $5.3 billion bid to buy Sharp, the Japanese display manufacturer who has faced financial difficulties in recent years. iPhone displays are currently manufactured by Sharp, Samsung and LG and assembled at Foxconn’s plant. A successful Sharp purchase puts Foxconn in the position to make iPhone display components, going beyond assembly. Another possibility is that Foxconn will start producing its own branded electronics products, although competition with Apple is unlikely given their relationship....

Apple hasn’t talked about it publicly, but the company is hiring human editors that will curate content for its upcoming News app and work with publications to quickly surface breaking stories. When Apple showed off its News app coming to the US, UK, and Australia with iOS 9, it didn’t say much about how the content would be curated beyond publishers submitting their own RSS feeds. At first Apple is just pulling in news from RSS feeds ahead of rolling out publishing tools for creating rich content specifically for the platform, but how will the company present the news to readers?...

Apple has today unveiled tvOS 13, the newest Apple TV operating system, on stage at its WWDC 2019 keynote. Earlier on today’s keynote, Apple previewed one of its original shows, “For All Mandkind”, that’s coming to Apple TV in the Fall. The new version of tvOS will have support for multiple users, every user gets their own “up next” queue. Switching between users can be done through a brand new Control Center that’s available in tvOS 13....

Last week, Apple shared an ad promoting the durability of the iPhone 12 showing someone cooking at home while filling the smartphone with flour and dropping it several times. Today the company posted a new ad on its YouTube channel reinforcing the benefits of the Ceramic Shield glass used in the iPhone 12. Named “Fumble,” the fun 30-second advertisement shows a woman accidentally dropping her iPhone on the street while talking on the phone....

Yesterday, we noted that Apple has begun allowing customers to purchase a new iPhone 5s through its online store and then pickup the product that day (or another day) at their local Apple Retail Store. This “Personal Pickup” option could have been the most efficient way to get a new iPhone from Apple, with online shipments reaching ship dates in October and lines at Apple Stores still going strong. However, multiple readers have noticed that the in-store pickup option has disappeared from both Apple’s Online Store and its Apple Store mobile app....

Following a number of complaints from consumers regarding graphics issues with Apple’s 2011 MacBook Pro, the company today announced a replacement program to remedy the issue for customers still experiencing problems. The affected models include 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pros built in 2011, as well as 15-inch Retina MacBook Pros built in 2012 and early 2013. MacBook owners who believe they may have one of these machines can check their warranty coverage on Apple’s website to determine whether they are eligible for a repair under this program....

Apple is opening a new data center in China, in partnership with a local Chinese data management firm, following tightened legislation over how companies can store data about users in the country. Apple says the new data center will allow it to comply with the regulations and improve the speed of Apple cloud services in the region. It reaffirmed earlier statements that it would not create a backdoor for any third-party (via CNBC)....

As spotted by Kyle Seth Gray, Apple Maps is sending out push notifications to travelers to remind them of the recommended self-isolation guidance following an international trip. The notification appears to be somewhat contextual. Rather than a blanket message sent out to all Apple Maps users, it seems to be targeting people who have traveled internationally recently, perhaps having visited an airport. This is likely using on-device intelligence due to Apple’s stringent privacy-preserving approach to features like this....
