Apple Music has signed a deal with digital media/lyrics company Genius that will see its artist interview show Verified on the streaming service. As part of the deal, Apple Music will get exclusive premieres for new episodes of the series that looks at the meaning and stories behind artists’ lyrics. According to Bloomberg: Apple Inc. won’t immediately have to publish a notice on its U.K. website that Samsung Electronics Co. didn’t copy its iPad tablet, a London court ruled today. Apple was ordered earlier this month to put a note on its U.K. site and buy advertisements in British newspapers to alert customers to a court ruling that Samsung hadn’t copied the iPad’s design. Cupertino, California-based Apple appealed saying it didn’t want to advertise for its rival....

Apple has announced that its first-ever virtual WWDC will start on June 22 this year and that it will be free for all developers through its Developer app and Developer website. There’s also a new event this year, a Swift Student Challenge for young developers 13 and older. We learned back in March that Apple would still hold WWDC this June but as a virtual event. However, it didn’t share an actual date....

Apple had already renewed its original Carpool Karaoke spin-off series for a third season last summer, but we haven’t heard anything more about it since then. But James Corden, who runs the show, released today on his YouTube channel the official trailer for the third season of Apple’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series. The trailer confirms that the third season of Carpool Karaoke: The Series features Jay Leno, Kesha, Rashida Jones, the cast of Stranger Things, and more stars....

Apple News has announced that it is teaming up with the National Association of Black Journalists, or NABJ, to “give early-career journalists the opportunity to work on the forefront of news and technology.” The new editorial fellowship runs from June 2021 through February 2022. Apple News and the NABJ describe the new program as a way to give early-career journalists access to key editorial areas, such as audio, aggregating top stories, and more....

Apple this evening has shared a new video offering a look into the development process that led to the creation of the Portrait Lighting feature on iPhone X. The video shows how Apple used the “art of portraiture” to come up with the technology… Apple explains that it worked with photographers and image makers to study lighting principles and advanced machine learning to create the Portrait Lighting feature. In the video, you see Apple working to create a picture in a professional studio with professional equipment, and then recreating it using just the iPhone X....

Next weekend, Apple will be bringing up its official Apple Store count in China to eleven. The Cupertino-based company will be opening up a new store at the Paradise Walk mall in the Jiangbei District of Chongqing on Saturday, July 26th. The official announcement was made on Apple’s retail website: The store will open up at 10 AM local time. Apple began teasing the new store with a colorful banner last week....

Apple’s prolonged patent battle with VirnetX was believed to be coming to an end back in August, but a new ruling out of an east Texas court this week brings bad news for Apple… As reported by Reuters, a federal judge in Tyler, Texas yesterday night ruled that Apple must pay $302.4 million in damages for infringing upon VirnetX’s patents with services like FaceTime and iMessage. VirnetX, a notorious patent troll, initially started coming after Apple in 2010....

The Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso won a 2021 Peabody Award for “offering the perfect counter to the enduring prevalence of toxic masculinity, both on-screen and off, in a moment when the nation truly needs inspiring models of kindness.” As revealed by EW, the Apple Original ‘Ted Lasso’ star Jason Sudeikis received the Peabody Award today. The award was presented by Will Ferrel to fellow SNL alum Sudeikis. The Peabody Awards honor the most powerful, enlightening, and invigorating stories in television, radio, and online media....

A new report from Patently Apple shows us a new patent application from Apple published today. This patent application describes a glass with “enhanced stiffness” for portable electronic devices like iPhone and iPad… The patent application explains an invention that would act as a cover glass for electronic devices. The cover glass could be applied over a display or over the body of the device for an added layer of protection....

As it continues to showcase new types of content in the App Store, Apple has recently started highlighting popular subscription applications with free trials. The new section is located under the “Apps” section in the App Store and aptly titled “Try It For Free.” In the section, Apple is currently highlighting four applications: 1Password, USA Today, Lake: Coloring Books, and Panna: Video Recipes. For each app, Apple touts the available free trial....

Apple just announced its Q1 2012 earnings in a press release a few minutes ago, which revealed very impressive numbers from the company. Apple revealed it sold a whopping 37 million iPhones during the holiday quarter, which now gives the company the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer spot —back from Samsung, who previously held the title. Earlier this month, Samsung gave estimates of 35 million phones sold during the holiday quarter. This means Apple beat the company by 2 million....

Apple has added a handy feature into OS X to easily capture the screen of an iPad or iPhone on the Mac itself. Apple positions the feature as a way to help developers quickly make app previews, which Apple introduced as part of iOS 8’s improvements to the App Store, but there is no reason why this couldn’t be used by others for different purposes. When plugging an iPad or iPhone running iOS 8 into a Mac running OS X Yosemite via USB, the iOS device now shows up as a standard camera input....

Apple has run ads on Instagram for some time. Starting from today, it is taking the platform more seriously, having started making its own posts. The account is sharing photos and videos taken on iPhones as part of its Shot on iPhone campaign. The Apple Instagram account has the handle you’d expect, @apple, and is verified to confirm its legitimacy. Apple has slowly adopted social media, although it still is yet to write a real tweet....

In an interview with Mediabistro published earlier today (via Engadget), Design Director of The New York Times Magazine Arem Duplessis reveals that he’s leaving the magazine for a new role at Apple as a Creative Director. Duplessis worked as Design Director at the The New York Times for nearly ten years and still lists the position as current on his LinkedIn profile, but in the interview said he’ll begin his new role in Cupertino this February....

Update: We’ve gotten ahold of the EOL notice, above. Apple is telling its educational resellers not to expect any more packaged software in the future, ZDNet reports. This includes boxed copies of Mac OS X, iLife, iWork, Apple Remote Desktop and Aperture. Each of these programs has been available on the Mac App Store for months. Apple has launched its latest special edition Beats headphones today together with designer brand Balmain with new versions of its Powerbeats 3 Wireless Earphones and Beats Studio Wireless Over-Ear Headphones. The companies have also enlisted a celebrity endorsement from Kylie Jenner who appears in ads for the headphones on Apple’s product pages and elsewhere. Both of the new special edition products feature the same color scheme with a light pink color (They call it “Safari”) and metallic gold accents....

Apple will likely begin its annual Back to School promotion this week (perhaps as soon as tomorrow), according to Apple retail sources. The promotion will give eligible students an iTunes/App Store gift card with the purchase of a Mac, iPad, and for the first time, an iPhone. The gift cards that come with Mac purchases will be worth 100$ while the cards accompanying the iOS Devices will be worth $50…...

As the fight for the right to repair your own devices continues, Apple is having some trouble cracking down on third-party repair shops that are using counterfeit parts. According to Motherboard, Apple last year sent lawyers after Henrik Huseby, the owner of an electronics repair shop in Norway, demanding the shop stop using aftermarket iPhone screens to repair iPhones. At the time, Apple was simply asking for a settlement. Norway customs officials stopped 64 iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s display replacement shipments from delivering to Henrik’s shop from Asia, noting that these screens were counterfeit....
