According to TWIT’s Leo LaPorte, Apple has hired away Tomlinson Holman, the brain behind Lucasfilm’s THX sound and the world’s first 10.2 surround sound system. This is exciting not only because the opportunity for better sound in Macs, AppleTVs and iOS devices but also because Apple gets one of the superstar pioneers and great minds behind digital media technology on its roster. WWDC scholarship winners receive free access to WWDC, as well as lodging. With iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur, Apple is introducing a new collaborative “Teams for Feedback Assistant.” Developers who work together can now easily report bugs to Apple on the same project and then check what other members of the team are reporting. Feedback Assistant is a dedicated portal for developers to report issues with Apple software, including iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. And now the company has made it easier for enterprise members and developer groups to share feedback during the development process....

One of the biggest announcements earlier this month at WWDC was the introduction of ARKit, Apple’s framework for helping developers build augmented and mixed reality experiences. In an interview with The Australian Business Review, Apple’s vice president of product marketing Greg Joswiak dives deeper into the goals of ARKit… Joswiak noted that thus far, the response to ARKit has been “unbelievable” with developers using it to build all sorts of different experiences, many of which we’ve highlighted thus far....

An intriguing patent application by Apple to deliver mood-based advertising contains what could be read as a strong hint that the rumored iWatch will, as we’ve speculated in the past, major on sensor technology. In addition to describing ways of assessing mood by such clues as likes in social media, type of applications used and music playing, the patent also lists physical characteristics that could be used: While there could be numerous ways to capture some of this data, for example voice analysis via Siri use, much of it would require the use of new sensors....

The monitoring firm claims Apple shipped over 1.4 million notebooks in the first quarter 2008, compared to near 900,000 the year before. While these sales leave Apple as seventh place notebook manufacturer according to Display Search figures, they do mean Apple and Asus are the biggest growing brands, with 61 and 67 per cent growth rates respectively – most other manufacturers experienced 20 – 40% growth. “DisplaySearch analysis indicates that the increasing transition of consumers from desktop PCs to notebook PCs is having a direct impact on brands’ growth and market share....

When Apple launched its first-party mapping software alongside iOS 6, users immediately discovered that there were a significant number of issues with the map data. Apple eventually issued an apology and said that the release was not up to the company’s standards. A new Reddit post today seems it point to the fact that Apple is finally ready to start making serious changes to how it corrects Maps data. Ever since the app debuted, it has had an option to report incorrect POI data to Apple....

Apple kicked off today’s keynote with a video highlighting some of the accessibility features of Apple products, such as spoken alerts letting a blind person know when the camera has detected a face and locked focus on it … Tim Cook said that he could not be prouder to share the video as Apple’s teams work so hard to make products accessible to everyone, and the company was highlighting those in a new accessibility website....

Here’s how someone bypasses your Passcode to access an open app you were using. First, open the Smart Cover to reveal the Passcode lock screen. Then hold down the power button until you see Slide to Power Off. Don’t slide it. Next, close the Smart Cover and open it again. Tap Cancel and voila! You’re in without a passcode. This hack doesn’t grant access to the whole system. Only the app you were were last using in the foreground....

According to the Financial Times, Apple has passed 10 million paying subscribers for Apple Music. Apple Music launched in June 2015 with a three month free trial. Since the launch, Apple announced it has 6.5 million paying subscribers in October. In November, Apple launched Apple Music on Android which no doubt attracted a significant chunk of additional new users. Crossing ten million is a significant symbolic milestone, as it now means Apple Music is half as large as Spotify’s paid userbase....

This will be the shortest diary series I’ve ever written! After providing my first impressions of Apple News+ in its UK incarnation just over a week ago, I’ve already canceled my one-month free trial. Indeed, I was so confident in my decision that I canceled it without waiting for the trial period to end, despite the fact that this means immediate loss of access to the service. First, make sure you have Parallels Desktop 6 installed. Then verify you have the latest updates for the virtual machine (VM) you create it with it on your Mac OS X system. In this example I needed to download the latest build. Install the update like normal following the wizard. If you didn’t download the latest updates, you’ll run into errors when installing Chrome OS. This is the error I ran into because I didn’t update Parallels first....

As the coronavirus pandemics continues on, AAPL is seeing further declines along with the rest of the market. This morning with the opening bell, Apple’s stock dropped another 3% which put the company below a $1 trillion-dollar valuation. Update 3/24: The entire US market saw a boost with the opening bell this morning tied to a potential rescue bill for the economy. AAPL is up 5% at the time of writing at $235 a share, putting it back over the $1 trillion-dollar market cap mark....

Longtime Apple Veteran and now VP of Apple Music, Oliver Schusser is going to become the new head of Beats starting next month. He’ll continue on as the VP of Apple Music and the company’s international content division as well, as Apple says it “remains committed to the Beats brand.” Reported by CNET, the news was leaked by an email Apple VP Eddy Cue sent to employees this month and Beats confirmed to CNET that Schusser will be taking over as the current Beats head, Luke Wood departs at the end of April....

Apple today pushed a new update to Apple Music for Android that officially brings the app out of its extended public beta period. With the update, Apple Music for Android is now at version 1.0, nearly 10 months after its initial release to the Play Store. In addition to bringing the app out of beta, today’s update also adds equalizer settings, giving users more control over the playback of Apple Music and iTunes content....
