Apple has sent out emails today to Apple News Publishers letting them know that they can now use HTML text formatting to more easily translate their web content into the Apple News Format. Instead of having to rely on Markdown formatting or other formatting types, the HTML support should make it easier for plugin developers and publishers to get their content onto Apple News even faster. Apple provided a list of newly supported HTML markup and tags in the email, and can be seen after the jump....

Apple has been ordered to pay a $2 million penalty after four retail employees from a San Diego Apple Store filed a lawsuit over meal and rest break policy. The complaint dates back to 2011 and became a class action lawsuit in 2013, although the retail policies were changed following the complaint in 2012. Back in the olden days Dell had a much bigger market share than Apple and offered products at prices Apple couldn’t match — those days are gone. Today, Apple announced it will be offering a superbly specced 27-inch LED display for just $999 — and that’s cheaper than the Dell dude, dude.See, Dell offers its own UltraSharp U2711 27-inch monitor. It costs $1,099. It’s a good display (if you don’t like curves) and it has the same LG hardware inside, but doesn’t offer what Apple does in its new monitor — which costs $100 less!...

Stop it, AT&T (great name) notes that Apple has a job opening for a Carrier Engineering team member in the Kansas City Missouri area.(via MR) Sprint of course is based in the Kansas City (Kansas) suburb of Overland Park. Analysts recently reported that Apple would be rolling the iPhone to Sprint and T-Mobile later this year. Kansas City is also where Google plans to roll out its 1GB Fiber to the home project....

Apple is coming together with Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla to deprecate the use of TLS 1.0 and 1.1 by early 2020. TLS stands for Transport Layer Security and is used to protect web traffic. ArsTechnica was first to report on the agreement, while Apple’s WebKit blog has also detailed the change. As we reported yesterday, Apple is now selling contract-free iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in retail stores and online. Following historic pattern, the 16 GB base model iPhone 6 costs $649 with higher tiers costing $100 extra. The iPhone 6 Plus starts at $749. Unlocked iPhones can be activated for use any carrier, AT&T, Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile. Apple usually launches unlocked models of their phones a couple of months after normal debut, but this year it seems slightly delayed....

During his trip to Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder’s meeting over the weekend, Tim Cook sat down for an interview with CNBC and shared some news about Apple’s recent acquisitions. Apple is notoriously quiet about its acquisitions, especially when it comes to smaller companies and startups. While Cook didn’t give anything anyway in relation to the types of companies Apple has recently acquired, he did share that it has purchased up to 25 in just the last six months....

Andy Miller, the previous head of the iAds division, left to a VC position in August. Apple snatched mobile advertising firm Quattro Wireless in early 2010 for $275 million, the company Miller cofounded in 2006. Teresi is a veteran of Quantcast, Yahoo, and PWC....

Apple has shared in a Newsroom post the first featured story in a series that will highlight students and teachers “using innovative technology in the classroom.” Today’s feature takes a look at the Music, Media and Entertainment Technology (MMET) program in Huntington Beach, California. Patently Apple reports on a new Patent application for a Fitness center app. The app has social and gaming hooks as well as location based help modules. The idea is to augment the fitness/training experience with all of the tech surrounding mobile devices. The Apple-owned sleep monitor app Beddit is out with an update today that makes good on a promise from the company a few months ago. With today’s update, the cloud syncing functionality of the app has been removed. Today’s update brings the app to version 2.9.2, and as reported before, Beddit Cloud is no longer available to users. Beddit Cloud let users upload and backup their sleep tracking data to the cloud, in addition to syncing to the Health app, for example....

As the launch of the Apple Watch nears, Reuters this evening reports that Apple has been increasing its advertising of the device significantly over the past month. Since the company’s “Spring Forward” event on March 9th, Apple has spent $38 million on its Watch advertising campaign. That number includes U.S. TV ads and digital responses. For comparison’s sake, Apple has spent $42 million on advertising for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus over the last five months....

Apple opened its education-focused event in Chicago today with an inspirational video touting how “one person can change the world.” Speaking at the event, Tim Cook talked about Apple’s 40 year history in the education market. Cook talked heavily about Apple’s work in education, saying that initiatives such as Everyone Can Code help the company ensure that students get the most out of their education. Cook also pointed to the March For Our Lives events around the country this weekend that show just how much power students have with their voices....

Apple has launched a pair of new augmented reality experiences designed to promote Apple Pay Express Transit. Apple has added a new AR feature to its Apple Pay website highlighting Apple Pay with Express Transit in New York City, and there’s a new Apple-designed Lens in Snapchat as well. On the Apple Pay website, Apple touts that you can now “take a virtual trip with Apple Pay” to “experience” the platform in augmented reality....

It’s been reported that Apple will not make access to the NFC chip in the iPhone 6 generally available to developers in the first year. A new report says that an Apple spokesperson has confirmed that the chip is for use with Apple Pay only. But that’s likely only temporary… During the launch of the iPhone 6, Apple specifically referenced using NFC to unlock hotel doors at Starwood resorts – expected to be seen in the spring – suggesting only that Apple will initially be selective in granting access to the chip....

The Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) first called out Apple in August last year, issuing an order for the iPhone maker to update its app store policies so dating app providers could use payment systems other than the one offered by Apple. The ACM then blasted Apple again last month, accusing the company of failing to make sufficient changes to its app store policies while issuing a weekly €5 million fine in the process....

Apple appears to be readying for an UK iTunes Radio launch in the near future. As indicated by this tweet, Apple’s director of iAd Paul Wright has recently been visiting media marketing agencies to discuss iAd in relation to iTunes Radio. Bloomberg said that Apple was planning to launch in the UK in ‘early 2014’ last October, but so far this has not happened several months into 2014. Although many people have seen iTunes Radio sporadically appear on their devices in recent months, it is has only officially expanded to Australia beyond the US launch alongside iOS 7....

Apple just released the following statement on the App corruption issue we reported earlier today: The “small number of users” seems to run counter to what Instapaper developer Marco Arment found as he publicized his issues with Apple (along with Good Reader) today. “The issue has been rectified and we don’t expect it to occur again,” Apple said.
