Apple has shared an update on its developer news and updates site to highlight an upcoming change to Apple Worldwide Developer Relations Intermediate certificates from Sunday, February 14th. Apple previously shared a detailed explainer on the upcoming certificate expiration and required actions, which developers can read here, that details which developers will be affected: Finally, Apple notes that the renewed certificates in this case will run through February 7, 2023....

The Register broke the story a year later that there was a third player involved in that switchover. P.A. Semi P.A. Semi had a chip that would have kept Apple on the PowerPC processor roadmap for the next few years. It had a low power 2GHz 64-bit dual-core PowerPC processor that matched up very well against Intel’s Core Duo line. The problem was that this chip wasn’t going to be able to be produced in large quantities until 2007....

As part of iOS 12, Apple has introduced ARKit 2.0 with a host of improvements. The latest version brings performance improvements, multiplayer support, and more. In addition to ARKit 2.0, Apple has introduced a new augmented reality file type called Universal Scene Description (USDZ). Adobe confirmed on stage that it will be an adopter of the new file format. Apple says that ARKit carries a host of improvements, including: Improved face tracking Realistic rendering 3D object detection Persistent experiences Shared experiences Craig Federighi touted a specific shared experiences feature, which will allow users to view the same augmented reality experience, whether it be as a participant or an observer....

Apple this evening has updated its Leadership webpage to reveal Adrian Perica as its vice president of corporate development. Perica originally joined Apple in 2009, focusing on leading mergers and acquisitions. He will report directly to Tim Cook through his updated role. He previously reported to CFO Luca Maestri. With his vice president of corporate development title, Perica will continue focusing on mergers, acquisitions, and strategic investing efforts, according to Apple....

Apple announced today the hiring of Barbara Whye as the company’s new vice president of inclusion and diversity. Whye currently holds a similar position at Intel, and she will join Apple in 2021. The hiring was first reported by Fortune, which also included Whye in its list of Most Powerful Women this year. She joined Intel in 1995 as an engineer, and since then, Whye has been involved in numerous roles in the company, such as leading engineering projects to start new Intel facilities around the world....

After announcing a new partnership earlier today with The Conservation Fund to protect 36,000 acres of forest, news of another environmental effort by the company comes as SunPower announces plans to build a new solar power project in China. SAN JOSE, Calif., April 16, 2015– Continuing its growth in the world’s largest solar photovoltaic market, SunPower Corporation today announced that it plans to partner with Apple to build two solar power projects totaling 40 megawatts (MW) in ABA Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefectures, Sichuan Province of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC)....

Apple has announced a new collection of Sport Loop bands for Apple Watch today, with accompanying watch faces to go with them. The new Sport Loop bands feature “bold designs that represent 22 nations around the world,” and they come ahead of the Summer Olympics being held in Tokyo next month. These limited-edition bands are designed to “celebrate the describable drive and competitive spirit of all athletes and fans.” Here are the countries represented by the new bands:...

Apple Mail vs G Suite webmail is a discussion I’ve had with many other IT directors at different schools over the past few years. Some Apple schools focus everyone on using Mail.app since it’s built it, updated with macOS, and creates a similar experience on iOS. Other schools actually remove Mail.app from the new Mac deployments and force people to use the G Suite web interface? I could argue it both ways, and I’ll give you my explanation in this week’s Making The Grade....

Apple added 3D flyover support in its Maps application for Mac and iOS to three new cities this weekend: Perth, Australia; Saint-Tropez, France; and Cordoba, Spain. This addition comes just a few months after Apple added flyover support for Cape Town and others as the company continues to expand its coverage to include as many major cities as possible. Not everyone’s excited about Apple’s 3D mapping technology, though. The Norwegian government has blocked Apple from collecting flyover data from Oslo, the nation’s capital....

Apple has updated its online store to start accepting PayPal as a payment method in both the United States and United Kingdom. PayPal was already an option for those who shopped through the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore, but this is the first time the company has offered it through the Apple Online Store. PayPal previously took a swipe at Apple over its cloud platform’s security issues, but tried to be friendly when it came to mobile payments—possibly because PayPal felt threatened by Apple’s jump into that space....

Six years ago Apple dropped $3 billion on its largest acquisition ever to acquire Beats Electronics. Music mogul Jimmy Iovine and hip-hop legend Dr. Dre built the consumer electronics brand into a household name, and Beats-branded headphones were flying off the shelves. Apple could tell. It sold Beats headphones and speakers in Apple Stores so the success of Beats was no secret. Beats also had a months-old streaming music service that Apple used to build Apple Music, but it’s clear in retrospect that Apple also saw continued value in Beats as a hardware brand....

Confirming speculation, Apple is introducing new model Mac minis. There’s three in all, including a 2.26Ghz and 2.53GHz model with 160GB and 320GB drives respectively. The third model offers a 1 terrabyte drive and is configured as a media server. Starting at £499 (inc. VAT), or XXX in the US, the entry level Mac mini hosts a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR3 1066 MHz memory, a 160GB hard drive, five USB 2....

Apple announced today that it has invested $10 million to COPAN Diagnostics, as part of its Advanced Manufacturing Fund for US businesses. COPAN Diagonistics is a manufacturer of collection kits for coronavirus samples. The investment will help the company grow production levels to more than one million kits per week. In the past, Apple has used the Advanced Manufacturing Fund to invest in companies directly related to its supply chain, like Corning glass, or Finisar — the VCSEL laser manufacturer whose components form part of the Face ID TrueDepth camera system....

As promised, the folks at Nokia launched their alternative to Apple Maps for iOS: a new cross-platform solution called “Nokia Here”. Based off HTML 5, Here is now available on the iTunes App Store for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad this morning, offering users full map views, the ability to save maps for later viewing, coverage of 200 countries, search history, Facebook login integration, step-by-step voice-guided navigation for the car and walking, offline map viewing, and social features that allow users to share their location....

While Apple canceled its Apple Music festival back in 2017, it still hosts free shows from time to time. Today the service is promoting another free live concert in LA, this time featuring Tyler, The Creator. The application for free tickets is open now for those 16 years of age and older. Apple Music is putting on the free show next Wednesday, May 22nd (which will also be livestreamed on the platform) in LA at Territory of Promotion to celebrate Tyler, The Creator’s new album, Igor....

A new report from Bloomberg today offers additional information on Apple’s plans to adjust operations as the COVID-19 pandemic worsens in many areas. The report explains that Apple will vary its approach around the world based on local conditions. In the United States, Apple has told its employees that it does not anticipate a full return to physical offices “before the end of the year.” In Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions, however, Apple says it does “anticipate full resumption will take place over the coming months based on local conditions” for “many” offices....

Apple will be offering two new workshops at Apple Stores in the new year, CNET reports, each designed to help customers bring out their artistic side. One is geared to creative photography techniques on the iPhone, while the other is about using iPads for sketching, drawing and painting. Both workshops are part of Apple’s Start Something New campaign, first launched a year ago by using retail stores as temporary art galleries …...

If you plan on attending Apple’s annual developers conference, the window for WWDC 2017 registration is now open. Apple is expected to unveil iOS 11 and macOS 10.13 at the upcoming conference. The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off on June 5 and runs through June 9. After being held in San Francisco for the past several years, Apple is bringing the conference back to San Jose this year at the McEnery Convention Center....

Apple has added a fifth partner to its list of iPhone distributors in India as it continues its sales push in the country. Optiemus Group will now begin distributing iPhones with a focus on expanding to “neighborhood cellphone stores” in India. Apple is said to be targeting 2 million iPhone sales in the country during its fiscal year 2015… News that Optiemus will begin distributing the iPhone in India comes from The Times of India, which cites three industry executives and says more partnerships are expected to follow....
