The US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple today (via PatentlyApple) detailing how a future iPhone could potentially utilize a virtual SIM card that integrates NFC technology. We reported back in October 2010 rumors of Apple experimenting with virtual SIM cards that would essentially allow consumers to bypass carriers when purchasing an iPhone and utilize a carrier-chooser App Store app to select the network of their choosing....

Just days after launching a repair program for the iPhone 6 Plus “Touch Disease” flaw, Apple today launched yet another repair program, this time for iPhone 6s users. The program is focused on users that are affected by a battery flaw that causes their iPhone 6s to unexpectedly shut down. Apple claims that the issue plagues “a very small number of iPhone 6s devices” that were manufactured between September and October of 2015....
Apple is looking to double the amount of personnel on its in-house marketing and advertising team, according to a report from AdAge. Currently, according to the report, the team includes 300 employees, but Apple is said to be looking to increase that number to between 500 and 600 people. But it seems Apple intends to adjust the final price based on your location. As a couple of users point out on Twitter, citing developer preview of iOS 9, Apple Music will be available in India at a price point of Rs 120 ($2) for an individual account (instead of costing north of Rs 600). For the family membership, the company is asking for Rs 180 ($3). If the company does stick with this pricing, it is putting Music app in a far better position in India....

Apple is looking very comfortably on-track for its goal of 40 retail stores in China by October as it has announced that two more stores will open this month. Cnet notes a new section just hit the Mac App Store called Apps Enhanced for Lion. Apple was a good sport too and allowed one third party app in the top two rows of apps. Update: Macrumors notes that Apple has begun selling Final Cut Pro 7 (which is likely not enhanced for Lion) the old fashioned way. Final Cut Pro 7 was pulled ahead of the release of Final Cut Pro X in June but there has been some backlash among the higher end users because of missing features....
We first reported on an Apple patent for Face ID on Macs back in 2017, before we knew what Apple would call the feature when it debuted in the iPhone X. That patent has today been granted. The patent is for a more intelligent version of Face ID than is currently used on iPhones… The granted patent could use the Mac’s camera to do two things. First, it would avoid timing-out into sleep mode when there’s someone in front of the machine....
Despite Apple saying that its products and services are ad-free, there are some ad slots on the App Store and other native iOS and macOS apps. As the company’s services category continues to grow, it seems that Apple is taking the next big step to invest in its advertising platform with the hiring of Antonio Garcia Martinez — who worked at Facebook’s ad team. As reported by Business Insider, Martinez was hired by Apple in April and is expected to work in Cupertino, California, based on information from his LinkedIn profile....

There are donate buttons for amounts ranging from $5 to $200 in the U.S. store, and for similar sums in other countries. Apple announced today that it is expanding the availability of its Apple Music student membership. The company hasn’t yet confirmed a complete list of new markets, but says the discounted membership is coming to 82 new regions this month… Apple Music’s student membership is today available in an additional 79 markets, while it will further expand to three additional markets later this month on February 26th. New markets include Israel, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal and Taiwan....

. Digitimes reports that although rumors have claimed that Apple is preparing an iPad 3 for launch during fall 2011, Chinese part suppliers are calling the rumors false.
